Press 53 uses Submishmash for the submission of short story and poetry collections, for submissions to our every-odd-year anthology series Surreal South, and for our annual writing contest, the Press 53 Open Awards. Please read and follow the guidelines carefully.
Press 53 is an independent publishing company located in Winston-Salem, NC. By no set design, about half of the books we publish (Poetry collections, short story collections, novels, and memoirs) are from writers in and around the North Carolina region. The other half are located from Florida, to California, to Washington Sate, to New England, and several points between. A little over half our writers are women.
Our goal is to ignore market trends and publish writing that appeals to our editors.

We have five categories (Poetry, Flash Fiction, Short Story, Creative Nonfiction, and Novella). Cover Sheet: Include a cover sheet for each entry (3 poems equal one entry) with your name, address, telephone, e-mail. NOTE: This is a blind read; your name must appear ONLY on your cover sheet and NOT on your manuscript pages, otherwise your entry will be disqualified.
Poetry: submit 3 poems (10 pages max), single-spaced. Note: 3 poems equals one entry. Poetry will be judged on the collective strength of all 3 poems. We publish all three poems entered for First Prize, Second Prize and Honorable Mention.
Final judge is Press 53 Poetry Series Editor Tom Lombardo.
